There are two reasons for choosing Mallorca Island for our end-of-summer vacation this year, the first is that Mallorca is a beautiful island and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. In Mallorca you can find everything: beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, breathtaking scenery and a Mediterranean cuisine that will satisfy the most demanding palates. For those who love nightlife, you will be spoiled for choice with restaurants, bars, lively pubs and trendy clubs. The second reason for choosing Mallorca is the curiosity to discover Ikos Porto Petro, the latest addition to the Ikos Resorts family, which opened its doors in mid-June. Of course, it is always a risk to stay in newly opened hotels or resorts but, in my opinion, Ikos is a guarantee and worth the risk.
The brand new Ikos Porto Petro is located in the Santanyi region about 50 minutes drive from Palma de Mallorca’s main airport (PMI), very popular among international travelers, as well connected to the major European cities. The region of Santanyi is well known for its beautiful coastal bays and charming marina. As mentioned earlier, Ikos Porto Petro is strategically located as you can reach, in just a 20-minute drive, the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca, such as Caló des Moro, Cala S’Almonia, and Cala Llombards, as well as visit the towns of Santanyí, Cala Figuera and of course Palma de Mallorca. The small town of Porto Petro is perfect for a peaceful vacation in a natural setting, being right next to the Mondrago Natural Park, you will find beautiful landscapes, dazzling coves as Cala Mondrago and Cala S’Amarador as well as hiking trails suitable for the whole family. About 4 km north from Porto Petro, you will be able to see Cala d’Or, an elegant and vibrant town whose center boasts a beautiful marina filled with yachts, small sandy coves.
As in all the other Ikos Resorts, at the new Ikos Porto Petro you will find the amazing Unconditional Luxury concept, their wonderful and exclusive way of being. Many people do not like the all-inclusive formula, in this case I assure you, they would change their minds. Here, as in the other Ikos Resorts, included in the room rate you will be able to enjoy the mini-bar, 24/24 room service, snacks in the various bars, including the pools and beaches, as well as the possibility to use, according to availability, a Tesla for one day.
Our vacation at the new Ikos Porto Petro Resort
Our flight from Milan Orio al Serio was very early in the morning, but getting up at 03:00 am was well worth it as it meant we had the full day upon arriving at Palma!!! To be honest, I did not expect the Palma airport to be so big, but even so, we retrieved our luggage very quickly. Having booked directly with Ikos, we had the transfer to and from the airport included in the room rate. On the way out we were greeted by a lovely young lady who, informed us that our driver would be arriving shortly to take us to the resort. The transfer time from the airport is about 45 to 50 minutes, time passed really fas as we where busy admiring the landscape.
As at all the Ikos Resorts, the security gate announces that you have arrived at destination. As the minivan door opened, the first thing that caught my eyes was an incredible perfectly framed view of the bay, impossible not take advantage of this moment and immediately take a photo!!! We are greeted by Skerdi who invited us in and escorted us to the Lobby Bar for our check-in. A young lady offered us refreshing wipes and drinks of our choice. Before we even begin the check-in formalities, we are asked if we would like to have breakfast; but we decline the invitation and prefer a cappuccino, soaking up the atmosphere and starting to relax admiring the breathtaking view. We are introduced to Chiara who, together with Skerdi, took care of us during our stay. Since we arrived very early our suite was not ready, we where however offered a tour of the resort by buggy with fantastic Dimitris as a guide, the tour was great and we really enjoyed it.
After wandering here and there to get acquainted with the resort, we went for lunch at “The Market” buffet, which has a breathtaking view of the bay.
After lunch we were immediately escorted to our suite the 4216, the suite is really big and bright in an open-space style. The bedroom and living room are elegantly furnished with lots of wood and natural textures. The floor-to-ceiling windows overlook a big balcony furnished with a large day bed and a breathtaking view of the pools, the bay, the Fresco Restaurant and pool bar. Wherever I look I see pine trees, olive trees, palm trees and all kinds of plants and flowers and in the distance the beautiful cove. Cannot wait until it gets dawn to take a memorable photo.
The suite has all the amenities that you would expect from a luxury hotel: WI-FI access, flat-screen TV, fully stocked in-room bar with soft drinks, branded spirits, mineral water, red and white wine replenished daily, Nespresso coffee machine and tea-making facilities.
The bathroom is spacious and features a bathtub, rain shower and twin vanity and toilet in a dedicated space. Plush towels, robes and plastic-free slippers. Products as shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and body lotion are now in dispensers and all of the highest quality from Anne Semonin Paris.
Dining
Dining is one of the prides of Ikos Resorts, and here at Ikos Porto Petro the tradition is upheld as well. There are five a la carte restaurants and a new concept buffet restaurant “The Market“. The various restaurants offer local and international cuisine and menus created by Michelin-starred chefs. Each restaurant has its wine list with a total of over 300 labels including red, white, and rosé wines without forgetting Champagnes and Brut!!!!
Included in the room rate, you can also have a dine out experience and enjoy local flavours by booking a restaurant included in the curated list.
A la carte breakfast is served at Fresco the italian restaurant, Oliva the spanish restaurant and Season’s restaurant (only for Deluxe guests). You will find freshly prepared products by the chef, the choice is wide and of very good quality. You can choose from an incredible variety of products such as: coffee, tea, juices, smoothies, pancakes, waffles, yogurt, various types of croissants and donuts, as well as fruits, vegetables, cold cuts and cooked eggs. Believe me you will be spoiled for choice.
For those who prefer, as we do, a buffet-style breakfast, “The Market” buffet is perfect there is a rich selection of cold and hot dishes with anything you could wish for.
We usually have room service for breakfast on our last day, but if you have a gorgeous balcony want to enjoy a relaxing breakfast, just call room service and a delicious breakfast will be brought to your room.
At “The Market” buffet breakfast is served from 07:30 to 11:00 am – Fresco Restaurant from 08:00 to 11:00 am – Oliva Restaurant from 08:00 to 11:00 am and at Season’s Restaurant from 08:00 to 11:00 am but only for Deluxe guests. No reservation is needed.
For lunch we usually have a light snack on the beach or by the pool under the umbrella or enjoy a salad and fruits at the buffet; “The Market” buffet offers a wide range of dishes such as pasta, meat, fish, cheese, vegetables, fruit, and, to end on a sweet note, mouth-watering cakes, pastries, creams and ice cream!!!!
What about dinner?
For dinner you have a choice between 5 à la carte restaurants or a casual buffet dinner. A la carte restaurants need a reservation.
Season’s: I’m honest was my favourite both in terms of food as well as the very elegant decor. At Season’s we enjoyed dishes that combined Mediterranean ingredients with Asian flavours and a touch of Latin America. I really enjoyed the tomato salad with mango and avocado a fresh and light starter that paired nicely with a roasted pork tenderloin with kimchi, crispy panko and creamed corn. My half had, sesame-crusted salmon, Creole tomatoes and yuzu miso broth, served with ginger rice. Desert was to dream for, a caramel mousse, with soft chocolate cookie and caramelized popcorn. To make sure you don’t get the wine pairing wrong, I suggest you ask for Maria, the Sommelier, who will be pleased to guide you in making the best choice.
Anaya: the Asian à la carte restaurant has an incredible view of the bay; the menu is designed by the Michelin-star Chef Thiou. We enjoyed refined cuisine with Thai accents that combines Asian techniques with Mediterranean products and contemporary seasonings – a great dining experience !!!!
Oliva : we are in Spain so we could not miss the restaurant with typical Iberian cuisine. At Oliva’s we enjoyed traditional dishes with a modern twist and a menu created by Michelin-star chef David Ibarboure. The ambiance is modern and elegant with a fantastic view on the Porto Petro marina.
Fresco : the Italian à la carte restaurant with a menu designed in cooperation with Michelin-star chef Ettore Botrini. At Fresco’s, you will enjoy dishes inspired by Italian and Mediterranean cuisine served with excellent Italian wines. The beef tagliata with celeriac puree, mushrooms and pepper sauce was delicious.
Beach Club : à la carte restaurant serving classic international dishes and fresh Mediterranean flavours. The Beach Club is an open-air venue with a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere. I suggest as an starter the avocado and chorizo salad with tomatoes, avocado cream, crumbled chorizo, chopped parsley and fresh chili. The beef tagliata with BBQ glaze and smoked tomatoes was to die for.
The Market : I am honest we never went to the buffet for dinner, however for those who prefer a more casual dinner The Market buffet restaurant is ideal. This is a new concept buffet, in fact you will not find the usual buffet you have at Flavors, but various international food stations. From the Pizza & Pasta Bar to the heat of Tandoori, the fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine in the Nikkei Corner, to the grilled meats of Asado. There is plenty of salads, sliced meats, cheese, fruits, and, to finish off dinner, desserts and ice cream for every tastes.
One very important thing to know for those who travel with children is that, every restaurant has a menu for children and teens with healthy and delicious options. In addition to the restaurants, you can take advantage of 24 h room service. This is a very convenient service if you arrive late from a exploring the island and you are too tired to go to dinner or lunch, or if you have an early flight, in-room breakfast is extremely convenient.
Entertainment and relaxation
To brighten up your days and of course your evenings at Ikos Porto Petro you have the choice between 6 sophisticated bars, where you can relax drinking beautifully prepared drinks and cocktails, and having a chat while listening to music.
When at the beach or pool, we loved going at the Pool Bar for a cocktail, cold beer or a delicious smoothie. When on holiday I really get lazy and don’t want to get up from my lounger, therefore instead of going for lunch at the restaurant we often opted for a light snack by the sea or the pool, which in my opinion is a great option!!!
Open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Lobby Bar was my favorite, it is elegant and refined with a breathtaking view, a pit stop for a cappuccino was a must before heading down to the beach or out to explore Mallorca. The Lobby Bar was also the perfect place to have a drink or glass of champagne before going to dinner!!!!
Open from 09:00 a.m. to 00:00 a.m.
The Beach Club Bar is open all day and offers light snacks and signature cocktails!!! Sometimes we would stop in for a daiquiri, or for a light lunch or snack. The Bar, with outdoor seating, is located right next to the à la carte restaurant of the same name.
The Porto Petro Bar, with its amazing view on the marina and its large terrace that leads to the gardens is the right place for signature cocktails, some designed by the world-famous mixologist Marian Beke. It was also our favourite place for an after-dinner drink listening to live music.
Open from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.
The Gelateria is the perfect place for a delicious snack for young and old alike. I am not an ice cream lover but sometimes it was nice to sit at a small table admiring the view and eating a delicious ice cream.
Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Theater at Ikos Porto Petro, is different than at the other Ikos as it is inside and has really comfortable seatings. Performances start at 9:45 p.m. and last about an hour. We attended the 90s one and Micheal Jackson and must say that the shows are very good and the cast, in my opinion, especially the singers, are very talented.
How did we spend our days
We really did not have time to get bored during our vacation at Ikos Porto Petro as there are plenty of things to do. When on vacation I like to take it easy and soak up the sun, but not all of us have the same tastes. If you are sporty and like to keep fit even on vacation you are spoiled for choice both in and out of the water; my husband for example loved to go canoeing and explore the beautiful coves. But there is much more you can do as outdoor yoga, paddle boarding, pedal boats or cycling by renting (free of charge) one of the bicycles.
You can also exercise in the state-of-the-art Cardio gym and training room, attend the Zumba, water aerobics and Pilates classes.
If you enjoy tennis well, you can put your tennis skills to the test on one of the 3 modern tennis courts with incredible coastal views. You can find out more here: https://ikosresorts.com/commonfiles/IPP_TennisAcademy_Flyer.pdf
My husband and I prefer the beach to the pool but this is personal taste. At Ikos Porto Petro there are 5 pools, this means that you will never have a problem finding space or a sun lounger. The Beach Club pool is probably the biggest pool and you have the choice between comfy loungers or cabanas, as well as a small shallow adjacent kids pool. The Beach club also overlooks one of the beaches on offer at the hotel. There is also another pool located right by Fresco restaurant, as well as our favourite beach it is rather small but has a fantastic view and comfy loungers. There is also a very calm and peaceful adult’s pool and a heated pool at the SPA. You can relax and soak up the sun under an umbrella on comfy loungers or cabanas, attentive and dedicated staff will serve you food and drinks directly at your lounger or cabana so as to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
A must for me when on vacation is the SPA, it is the best way to relax and get pampered with Anne Semonin, Paris products. The environment is the place par excellence for relaxation where you can revitalize your body and mind in a refined and serene setting and choose from a wide range of personalized treatments performed by expert therapists. I usually have a rejuvenating massage and I must say that the one practiced by Katerina was one of the best and most relaxing I have ever had.
At the SPA there is also a heated swimming pool, thermal suite with sauna and steam room, state-of-the-art fitness room with the latest equipment. If you wish, you can complete your SPA day by getting your hair done at the hairdressers and a manicure.
What about the kids!!!
We don’t have kids, but Ikos Resorts are renowned for being family-friendly, children and teens, regardless of their age, can enjoy a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities. Parents and grandparents can relax and enjoy their vacation, leaving, their children in safe hands. The kids clubs adhere to Ofsted standards, there’s a creche that runs from four months to four years old with various activities, in this case there is a cost associated with using the creche.
Daily activities are organized at the “Hero’s Kids Club” at no extra cost and has three sessions from 4 to 17 years old.
Exploring Mallorca with a Blue Tesla
Ikos Porto Petro offers you the possibility to use a Tesla for one day, this is subject to availability!!! Unlike many resorts, Ikos encourages their guests to explore the surroundings, Mallorca has lots to offer. This is what we did during our day out with the Tesla.
After breakfast, we picked up our Tesla and set off aimlessly in the direction of Porto Cristo, a coastal village located on the east coast of the island of Majorca about 35 km away.
Porto Cristo is the gateway for those who want to visit the 1200-meter long and 25-meter deep Dragon Caves; unfortunately suffering from claustrophobia we did not go!!! But if you have no problems I recommend you visit the Caves it is really worth it.
On the way back we stopped for lunch in Cala Murado and then continued on to discover sheer cliffs, small rocky bays and hidden coves. Obviously it is impossible to see them all, as the coast of the island of Mallorca is 500 kilometers long the beaches to visit are really a lot, impossible to seem them all in one day.
You truly have an incredible choice : coves with pebbles, bays surrounded by wilderness, not to mention kilometer-long beaches of white sand, soft as talcum powder, all with crystal clear water with countless shades of turquoise.
Mallorca offers various possibilities as family friendly beaches, as Santanyi beach, with its gently sloping sandy bottom, as well as hidden and exclusive coves.
Many beaches in Mallorca are nestled within beautiful coves, some very wild such as Cala Egos located in the southwest. My favorite is Cala Figuera a cove of sand mixed with pebbles and stones and you to look for it as it is well hidden.
The day passed quickly we could not see everything but what we were able to see fully fulfilled us.
Shuttle bus
A few days a week Ikos offers a shuttle bus service. We took advantage of it to go to Cala D’Or, a charming little village not far from the resort. We strolled through the narrow streets of the center, browsing through boutiques and small shops perfect for a little bit of shopping!!!!
We also used the shuttle bus one morning to go to the Santanyi market interesting and very pittoresque. If you want to spend a few hours outside the resort the shuttle bus service is perfect.
Deluxe Collection
As in the other Ikos in Greece and Spain, for discerning guests who want a little something extra you can book a Deluxe room and suite.
Deluxe Collection guests can enjoy exclusive benefits such as private pools, Deluxe Concierge, dedicated restaurant and bar. As well as Tantinger Champagne, a dinner on the beach, minibar with upgraded brand spirits, pillow menu, and, a complimentary neck, shoulder, and back massage.
Final Verdict
Our stay at Ikos Porto Petro was very pleasant and relaxing. Going to a newly opened resort is not always the right choice, but I can assure you that we really enjoyed our stay at Ikos Porto Petro. It is a luxury all-inclusive resort where hospitality and the customer come first, with very high quality standards and service. The resort is elegant and refined in an incredible setting where nature reigns supreme. The word “no” does not exist and everything is aimed at making the customer feel important and pampered.
I would like to thank all the staff who went out of their way to make our vacation unforgettable, especially Skerdi, Chiara, Dimitris, Maria the sommelier, Katerina from the Spa but also all the others whose names I unfortunately cannot remember. It was also a pleasure to see again Dirk Smeets, General Manager of Ikos Porto Petro.
Disclaimer: This article was written by me after a week spent at Ikos Porto Petro together with my husband. The stay was duly paid for as it was not a freebie for promotional purposes.
